Bikini season is upon us. Adorable bathing suit: check. SPF: check. Celebrity-style sunglasses: check. Extra time in the gym: check. Smooth derrière: errrr…not so much. If you’re like many of us gals, you’ve experienced cellulite. Those annoying, unsightly little “dimples” covering our backsides. Cellulite has been called many unflattering things…hail damage…cottage cheese…orange peel. By any name, cellulite can throw a girl into total panic-mode during the summer months. But good news, ladies. There are real, effective solutions that can have us donning bikinis and short shorts, STAT (sans the bumpy thighs)!
What The Heck Is Cellulite?
Ok…first, what exactly is cellulite? According to Webster, cellulite is deposits of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue (as in the thighs, hips, and buttocks) that give a puckered and dimpled appearance to the skin. Simply put, it’s deposits of fat trapped in pockets beneath the skin. (Argh…as if we gals don’t have enough to worry about). So what causes it? It could be due to changes in metabolism, dieting too much (and changing the architecture of the skin architecture), hormonal factors, or just plain ole’ genetics.
No Dimples On My Derrière, Please. How Do I Get Rid Of It?
So how can you kick cellulite to the curb?? When it comes to smoothing out your backside, here are some effective options:
- Toning, toning, toning (think lunges and squats)
- Your diet (eating cleaner foods…easy on the burgers and fries)
- Upping your water intake (to flush out your system)
- Topical creams
For topical options, you can find many over-the counter creams and gels. I decided to try Nivea’s Good-Bye Cellulite Cream and after using it for several days (on the tush and backs of my legs/thighs), I definitely noticed smoother, less “dimply” skin. Another cream that gets great reviews is Murad Body Firming Cream. And there are cosmetic options as well. One that’s not invasive and is setting the “gold” standard for effectively reducing cellulite is called Endermologie. A motorized machine with rollers that glide over the problem areas (think gentle suction) to redistribute the skin providing smoother, less dimpled results. While the results are effective…they are not permanent and must be ongoing in order to keep the smoother results.
Alright, ladies…time to throw on that bikini and hit the beach with total confidence!
